Diriyah
Diriyah is where the modern Saudi story starts — the birthplace of the first Saudi state in 1727, and now a beautifully restored UNESCO World Heritage District called At-Turaif, all mud-brick Najdi architecture rebuilt to its original style. It's roughly 20 minutes from central Riyadh, best visited in the late afternoon into evening when it's lit up and the temperature drops, paired with dinner at Bujairi Terrace's restaurants overlooking the district. What is At-Turaif?
At-Turaif was the original seat of power for the House of Saud, founded here in 1727 before the capital later moved to Riyadh. Much of the district fell into ruin over the 19th and 20th centuries; a major, ongoing restoration (part of a broader multi-billion-dollar Diriyah redevelopment) has rebuilt it in traditional Najdi mud-brick style, and it earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2010.

Getting there from Riyadh
A short taxi or ride-share from central Riyadh, typically 15–25 minutes depending on traffic and which part of the city you're starting from. There's no need to book a full day tour just for Diriyah — it's an easy independent half-day trip.
