Czech Republic

Everything you need to plan a great trip — from Prague's castle and bridges to Český Krumlov's fairy-tale old town — without the guesswork.

Flight time 8–11h depending on originFrom $450–950 round-tripVisa Visa-free up to 90 days for Schengen-exempt nationalities*Time zone GMT+1 (CET)

The Czech Republic pairs well with a shorter or longer trip: 4 days minimum (Prague plus a Český Krumlov day trip), 5–6 days ideal, or combine it with Vienna, Berlin, or Budapest for a 10–14-day Central Europe rail trip. Best months are May, September, and (for the Christmas markets specifically) December. Most Western passport holders get visa-free Schengen entry for up to 90 days as of mid-2026, with ETIAS expected to apply from later in 2026 or 2027. Budget from $45/day backpacking, $90–160/day mid-range — among the best value-for-quality trips in Western/Central Europe.

The Czech Republic solves a very specific travel problem: you want the fairy-tale European city — spires, cobblestones, a castle on a hill — without the Western European price tag or the wall-to-wall crowds of Paris or Rome in July. Prague delivers that in full, and it does it with the added bonus of being, per capita, the best beer country on the planet.

This guide covers everything: how many days to spend, when to fly, what it actually costs in USD, and the Schengen visa rule for your specific passport — not a generic one-size-fits-all answer. Written to be genuinely useful, and updated through the season.

Questions people actually ask

How many days do I need in the Czech Republic?
4 days is a solid minimum — 3 in Prague, 1 in Český Krumlov. 5–6 days lets you slow down properly. If you're combining it with other Central European cities (Vienna, Berlin, Budapest are all a few hours away by train), 10–14 days covers a full regional trip.
When is the best time to visit Prague?
May and September offer the best balance of good weather, long daylight, and manageable crowds. July–August is warmest and liveliest but also the most crowded and priciest. Late November–December is worth it specifically for the Christmas markets, despite the cold. See our full summer-vs-winter comparison for the detailed breakdown.
How much does a trip to the Czech Republic cost?
Backpacker budget: from $45/day (hostels, pub food, public transit). Mid-range comfort: $90–160/day (a 3–4-star hotel, restaurant meals, some paid attractions). A week-long trip for two, flights included, typically runs $1,800–3,000 mid-range — one of the better value destinations in Western/Central Europe, largely thanks to food and beer prices well below the Eurozone average.
Do I need a visa for the Czech Republic?
It depends on your passport — see our full visa and entry guide. As of mid-2026, most Western nationalities (US, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand) get visa-free Schengen entry for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. ETIAS, a pre-travel authorization (not a visa), is expected to launch in Q4 2026 and become mandatory sometime in 2027 — check the current status before booking.
Is the Czech Republic safe to visit?
Yes, very much so — violent crime against tourists is rare, and Prague is comfortable to walk even at night. The realistic risks are currency-exchange rip-offs and inflated taxi fares in touristy areas, both easily avoided (use bank ATMs and apps like Bolt or Uber instead of street taxis).
Prague alone, or Prague plus Český Krumlov?
Add Český Krumlov if you have 4+ days total — it's widely considered the country's best single day trip (or overnight), a fairy-tale medieval old town with its own impressive castle, about 2.5–3 hours south of Prague by direct bus.
Does the Czech Republic use the euro?
No — the currency is the Czech koruna (CZK), despite EU membership. Budget and pay in koruna; using euros at tourist-facing businesses is almost always worse value.
Does eSIM work well in the Czech Republic?
Very well — Airalo, Holafly, and similar providers offer EU-wide or Czech-specific data plans from about $5–20 for a week or two, with strong 4G/5G coverage nationwide, especially in Prague.
