Zakopane
Zakopane deserves 2-3 days. It's Poland's winter capital and summer hiking base at the foot of the Tatra Mountains, about 2 hours south of Krakow by bus or car. Summer (June-September) is best for hiking Tatra National Park's marked trails; winter (December-March) brings skiing at several resorts around town. The town itself is known for its distinctive wooden Zakopane architectural style, unlike anything else in Poland.

How many days do you need in Zakopane?
Two to three days is a solid amount. One day for a hike in Tatra National Park (Morskie Oko, a glacial lake, is the single most popular full-day trail), one for the town itself — Krupowki Street, the wooden architecture, a highlander-style dinner — and a spare day for skiing in winter or a cable car up Kasprowy Wierch in any season.
Hiking Tatra National Park
- Morskie Oko (Eye of the Sea) — the most famous hike, a relatively easy walk to a stunning glacial lake; extremely popular, so start early to beat both crowds and the shuttle-bus queue.
- Kasprowy Wierch — reachable by cable car for a quick mountain-summit experience without a serious hike, or by a longer trail for those who want to earn the view.
- Dolina Koscieliska — a quieter valley hike with fewer crowds than Morskie Oko, good for travelers wanting the scenery without the foot traffic.
Book the shuttle bus or private transport to the Morskie Oko trailhead in advance during peak summer weekends — private cars are banned on the access road, and the public shuttle queue can run over an hour without pre-booking.
Winter skiing
Zakopane is Poland's main ski hub, with several resorts in and around town (Kasprowy Wierch, Gubalowka, Harenda among them) — smaller and gentler than the Alps, but genuinely good value and far less crowded. December through March is the reliable snow window.

Getting there
Buses and minibuses run frequently from Krakow (about 2 hours) and are the easiest option — no train line reaches Zakopane directly. Renting a car works too, though parking in the town center gets tight in peak season.
