Gdansk deserves 2-3 days. It's a Baltic port city with a colorful, meticulously restored Hanseatic old town (also rebuilt after WWII, like Warsaw), a genuine beach town (Sopot) 20 minutes away by train, and the birthplace of the Solidarity movement that helped end communism in Eastern Europe. It's also the world's amber capital — the Baltic coast is one of the richest sources on Earth. Best visited May-September for beach weather; the old town works year-round.

Gdansk gets skipped by a lot of first-time Poland itineraries simply because it's not Krakow or Warsaw, and that's a genuine shame — it's one of the most photogenic old towns in the country, sits right on a real sandy Baltic coast, and comes with a 20th-century history (Solidarity, the shipyard strikes) that reshaped Europe.

How many days do you need in Gdansk?

Two to three days works well. One day for the Long Market (Dlugi Targ) and the old town's Hanseatic architecture, one for the European Solidarity Centre and the shipyard history, and a half or full day for the beach at Sopot or a boat trip to the Westerplatte peninsula, where World War II's first shots were fired.

What's actually worth seeing

  1. The Long Market (Dlugi Targ) and Long Lane (Ulica Dluga) — a strip of colorful merchant townhouses, rebuilt after WWII, anchored by the Neptune Fountain and the Gothic Main Town Hall.
  2. The European Solidarity Centre — a modern museum at the actual Gdansk Shipyard where the Solidarity trade union movement began in 1980, a pivotal chapter in the fall of communism across Eastern Europe.
  3. Sopot — a genuine Baltic beach resort town 20 minutes away by train, home to Europe's longest wooden pier and a lively pedestrian promenade.
  4. Amber shopping — the Baltic coast is one of the world's richest sources of amber; Mariacka Street's amber shops and stalls are the classic (if touristy) place to browse.

💡

Buy amber only from a shop, not a street stall promising 'real Baltic amber' at a suspiciously low price — cheap plastic fakes are common in touristy areas. A reputable jeweler will show you a certificate and can usually demonstrate authenticity on request.

When to visit

May through September is the best window for beach weather at Sopot and generally pleasant temperatures for walking the old town. The old town itself is worth visiting year-round, including a atmospheric winter visit with far fewer crowds — just skip the beach plans.

Questions people actually ask

Is Gdansk worth visiting on a Poland trip?
Yes — it's a genuinely different experience from Krakow or Warsaw: a Baltic port city with colorful Hanseatic architecture, a real beach resort nearby, and pivotal Solidarity-movement history. Worth 2-3 days if your itinerary allows 8+ days total.
How do I get from Gdansk to Sopot?
A local commuter train (SKM) connects them in about 20 minutes, running frequently throughout the day — no car needed.
Is Baltic amber from Gdansk actually genuine?
Reputable jewelers and shops sell genuine Baltic amber with a certificate of authenticity; cheap street-stall pieces sold as a bargain are frequently plastic imitations. Buy from an established shop, not a stall promising rock-bottom prices.
