Destinations in Egypt — where to go

Where to base yourself for the pyramids, the temples, and everything in between.

Egypt splits into two essential stops for a first trip: Cairo (the Pyramids of Giza, the Egyptian Museum, chaotic energy, 3–4 days) and Luxor (the Valley of the Kings, Karnak Temple, the open-air museum that is Upper Egypt, 2–3 days). Add a Nile cruise or a few days on the Red Sea coast and you've got a complete, well-rounded itinerary.

Egypt rewards travelers who slow down. It's tempting to try to see the Pyramids, a temple or two, and a beach all in five frantic days — but the country's biggest sights are spread out, and rushing between them means long transfers and short, exhausted visits. Here's every major destination, with an honest take on how much time each one actually deserves.

Questions people actually ask

What's the best first-time Egypt itinerary?
Cairo (3–4 days) + Luxor (2–3 days), connected by a 1-hour flight or an overnight sleeper train, is the classic combination. Add 3–4 days on the Red Sea coast (Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh) at the end if you want a beach break, or a 3–4 night Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan if you have 10+ days total.
Do I need a guide in Egypt?
Not required, but genuinely worth it at the major sites — a good licensed Egyptologist guide turns the Pyramids or Karnak from 'big old rocks' into something that actually clicks. Many hotels and tour operators can arrange one for a half or full day.
Cairo or Luxor first?
Doesn't matter much — most international flights land in Cairo, so it's the natural start or end point. Some travelers prefer Luxor first (fresher energy for the more demanding temple-hopping) and unwind in Cairo's cafes and museums at the end.
