Protaras sits about 15 minutes from Ayia Napa and shares its clear, shallow turquoise water — but trades the nightlife for a genuinely calmer, more family-oriented pace. Fig Tree Bay is the headline beach: soft sand, a tiny islet just offshore, and water shallow enough for young kids to wade in safely. It's a strong pick for families and couples who want beach quality without the party-town backdrop.

If Ayia Napa is the beach town that goes out, Protaras is the one that goes to bed early and is genuinely fine with that — same coastline, same water quality, a completely different crowd.

Fig Tree Bay — the main event

A near-perfect crescent of sand with a tiny islet just offshore (connected at very low water, otherwise a short swim), and water so clear and shallow it's become one of the most-photographed beaches in Cyprus. It gets busy in July–August but never reaches Nissi Beach's density or noise level.

Sunrise Beach and other options

Sunrise Beach, a short walk south, is a quieter, slightly less crowded alternative with the same water quality — a solid choice if Fig Tree Bay is packed. Both beaches are organized (sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars for food and drinks) rather than wild, which makes them easy with kids or if you don't want to haul your own gear.

💡

Protaras and Ayia Napa are close enough (about 15 minutes by car or a cheap taxi) that basing yourself in one and visiting the other for an evening — a Protaras beach day, an Ayia Napa night out, or the reverse — is a genuinely easy way to get both experiences without switching hotels.

Getting around

Protaras doesn't have its own airport — Larnaca (about 40–50 minutes) is the closer of Cyprus's two international airports; Paphos is roughly 2 hours away. A rental car is worth it here more than almost anywhere else in Cyprus, since Protaras itself is walkable but everything else (Cape Greco, Ayia Napa, Larnaca) benefits from your own wheels.

Questions people actually ask

Is Protaras good for families?
Yes — it's widely considered Cyprus's most family-friendly beach town, thanks to Fig Tree Bay's shallow, calm water and a noticeably quieter evening atmosphere than nearby Ayia Napa.
What's the difference between Protaras and Ayia Napa?
Same general coastline and water quality; different personality. Ayia Napa has the concentrated nightlife and younger crowd; Protaras has a calmer, more family-oriented pace built around Fig Tree Bay. They're 15 minutes apart, so many travelers experience both.
Does Protaras have its own airport?
No — the nearest is Larnaca International Airport, about 40–50 minutes by car. Paphos International Airport is roughly 2 hours away and less convenient for this side of the island.
