Ayia Napa
Ayia Napa runs two completely different shifts: daytime is Nissi Beach — white sand, shockingly clear shallow water, and a small islet you can wade to — and nighttime is Cyprus's biggest concentration of clubs and beach bars, especially June through September. It suits younger travelers and groups more than families; Protaras, 15 minutes away, is the calmer alternative with similar water. Budget €50–130 ($54–140) a night depending on how central you stay.
Ayia Napa started life as a sleepy fishing village and is now Cyprus's answer to Ibiza-lite — except the beach it's built around would be a headline attraction on its own merits, party scene or not.
Nissi Beach — the headline act
Nissi Beach is the reason Ayia Napa is on every 'best beaches in Europe' list: a wide curve of soft white sand, water so shallow and clear you can wade a genuinely long way out, and a small offshore islet you can walk or swim to when the sea is calm. It gets crowded and lively by midday in summer — sunbeds fill fast and there's usually music playing from a beach bar by early afternoon.
The nightlife, honestly assessed
Ayia Napa's clubbing scene, centered on the town square, is real and remains one of the bigger draws for 20-somethings across Europe every summer — but it has calmed down noticeably from its early-2000s reputation as travel habits shifted. If loud nightlife isn't your goal, you can absolutely still enjoy Ayia Napa by day and just treat the square as background noise rather than a destination.

Beyond the beach and the bars
- Cape Greco — a protected headland with sea caves, coastal walking and cycling trails, and dramatic cliff-top viewpoints, a short drive from the center.
- Makronissos Beach — a quieter alternative to Nissi, a short walk or drive away, with a similar sandy-and-shallow profile but noticeably fewer crowds.
- Ayia Napa Monastery — a small, atmospheric 16th-century monastery right in the town center — a five-minute detour that's easy to combine with dinner.

What it costs
| Item | Approx. cost |
|---|---|
| Hotel near the center, per night | €50–130 ($54–140) |
| Sunbed + umbrella, Nissi Beach | €8–15 ($9–16) |
| Club entry (peak summer) | €10–20 ($11–22) |
| Taverna dinner | €15–25 ($16–27) |
Book a hotel a short walk from Nissi Beach itself if the beach is your priority — the town center's nightlife strip is a separate cluster about 10–15 minutes away, and staying near one doesn't put you near the other.
Common mistakes
- Assuming Ayia Napa is only for partiers — the daytime beach scene is genuinely excellent for families too, especially outside the loudest central strip.
- Booking peak July–August without checking noise levels of your specific hotel — some properties sit directly above bars that run late.
- Skipping Cape Greco because it sounds like a detour — it's one of the best short coastal walks in Cyprus and easy to combine with a beach morning.
