Destinations in Brazil — where to go
Two megacities, a jungle, and one of the world's great waterfalls — and why you want more than one.
Brazil is too big to see in one trip, so most first-timers pick two or three of: Rio de Janeiro (beaches, mountains, Carnival, 4–5 days), São Paulo (Brazil's food-and-culture megacity, 2–3 days), Iguazu Falls (one of the world's great waterfalls, 2 days), and the Amazon out of Manaus (jungle lodges and river wildlife, 3–4 days). Rio plus Iguazu is the classic first-timer combo; add São Paulo or the Amazon if you have 12+ days.
Brazil is roughly the size of the continental United States, which means the 'just wing it' approach to planning falls apart fast — Rio and the Amazon are as far apart as Miami and Seattle. The trick is picking two or three destinations that genuinely complement each other and giving each enough days to actually enjoy it, instead of a exhausting sprint through a country that rewards slowing down. Here's every major destination, with an honest take on who it's actually for.

Rio de Janeiro
4–5 days, stay in Ipanema or Copacabana, and go up both mountains.

São Paulo
2–3 days, stay in Vila Madalena or Jardins, and eat everything.

Iguazu Falls
2 days, and see both sides if you can — they're genuinely different views.

The Amazon and Manaus
3–4 days, choose an ethical lodge, and get your yellow fever shot early.
