Brasov is Transylvania's best base: a fortified medieval Old Town ringed by forested mountains, with Bran Castle and Peles Castle both under an hour away. Spend 2–3 days here — one wandering the Council Square and Black Church, one on a Bran-and-Peles castle day trip, and a spare day hiking or riding the cable car up Mount Tampa. Budget around $25–45/day per person before hotels.

If Bucharest is Romania's grand, chaotic capital, Brasov is its postcard — a genuinely medieval square ringed by red-tiled roofs, with the giant white 'BRASOV' sign lit up on the mountainside above it like a smaller-scale Hollywood sign. It's also, not coincidentally, the single best base for the castle-hopping most people actually came to Romania for.

How many days in Brasov?

Two to three days covers it comfortably. One for the Old Town — Council Square, the Gothic Black Church, and the narrowest street in Southeastern Europe (Strada Sforii) — one for the Bran-and-Peles castle day trip, and a spare day for Mount Tampa or a side trip to Sighisoara or Rasnov Citadel.

The Old Town and Mount Tampa

Council Square (Piata Sfatului) is the heart of the old fortified town, lined with colorful baroque and gothic-era buildings and outdoor cafes. The Black Church nearby is one of the largest Gothic churches in Southeastern Europe — climb the bell tower for rooftop views. For the classic view of the town, take the cable car (or hike, roughly 45–60 minutes) up Mount Tampa, the forested hill directly behind the square.

Day trip from BrasovDistanceTime needed
Bran Castle~30 km / 45 minHalf day (combine with Peles)
Peles Castle (Sinaia)~45 km / 45–60 minHalf day (combine with Bran)
Sighisoara (Vlad the Impaler's birthplace)~115 km / 1.5–2hFull day or overnight
Rasnov Citadel~15 km / 20 min1–2 hours, easy add-on to Bran
💡

Book a Bran + Peles combined day tour (widely available from Brasov, roughly $30–50 per person including transport) rather than public transport for both in one day — it's genuinely tight otherwise, and a private or small-group tour skips the connection-timing headache.

What's actually worth seeing in town

  1. Council Square (Piata Sfatului) — the postcard center of the Old Town, especially atmospheric at dusk when the cafes fill up.
  2. The Black Church — a soot-darkened Gothic landmark (the name comes from fire damage centuries ago, not the original stone color); the bell tower view is worth the climb.
  3. Strada Sforii (Rope Street) — at points barely over a meter wide, it's a genuinely fun five-minute detour rather than a must-see in itself.
  4. Mount Tampa cable car — the fastest way to the town's best photo viewpoint, especially at golden hour.

When to visit

May–June and September are the sweet spot: mild weather, green mountains, and noticeably thinner crowds than July–August. Winter (December–February) has its own appeal — Christmas markets in Council Square and snow-dusted castles — but pack for genuinely cold temperatures and check road conditions if you're driving.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to do Bran, Peles, and Sighisoara all in one rushed day — pick two, or add an overnight.
  • Skipping Rasnov Citadel because it's 'just another castle' — it's a quick, low-effort add-on with some of the best panoramic views in the area.
  • Underestimating how cold Transylvania gets outside summer — the mountain air here is genuinely different from Bucharest's.

Questions people actually ask

How many days should I spend in Brasov?
Two to three days is ideal — one for the Old Town and Mount Tampa, one for a Bran-and-Peles castle day trip, and a spare day for Sighisoara or Rasnov Citadel if you have it.
How do I get from Bucharest to Brasov?
By train (the most comfortable option, roughly 2.5–3 hours), long-distance bus, or rental car (also about 2.5–3 hours via the DN1 or the newer A3 motorway sections). Trains run frequently and are a genuinely pleasant way to see the countryside.
Is Brasov or Sighisoara a better base for castle-hopping?
Brasov, for most itineraries — it's larger, has more transport and tour options, and sits closer to both Bran and Peles. Sighisoara is worth a dedicated visit (see our full comparison) but works better as a day trip or overnight add-on than a primary base.
